The One Health Microbiome Center (OHMC) at Penn State’s Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences will host a special virtual lecture by Curtis Huttenhower professor of computational biology and bioinformatics at 10 a.m. on June 27 in celebration of World Microbiome Day. Launched in 2018 World Microbiome Day aims to raise global awareness about the diverse communities of microorganisms that inhabit our bodies and environments. The event held via Zoom, is free and open to the public with advance registration required.
Curtis Huttenhower a globally recognized leader in microbiome research and public health co-directs the Harvard Chan Microbiome in Public Health Center at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. His work centers on developing innovative computational methods to analyze the human microbiome and its impact on health. The Huttenhower Lab has contributed significantly to the field by creating tools and workflows for microbial profiling statistical modeling and predictive analysis advancing microbiome-based approaches for disease prediction and therapeutic development.
Curtis Huttenhower who has been a faculty member at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health since 2009 holds advanced degrees from Carnegie Mellon University and Princeton University. In addition to co-directing the Harvard Chan Microbiome in Public Health Center (HCMPH) he leads the HSPH Microbiome Analysis Core and serves as an associate member of the Broad Institute. A key contributor to the Human Microbiome Project Huttenhower is widely recognized for his groundbreaking work in exploring the functional roles of microbes in human health. His innovative research has earned him numerous prestigious honors including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers one of the highest accolades presented by the U.S. government to emerging scientific leaders.
The One Health Microbiome Center is committed to connecting Penn State and global audiences with trailblazers who are reshaping our understanding of life sciences said Seth Bordenstein director of OHMC professor of biology and entomology and the Dorothy Foehr Huck and J. Lloyd Huck Chair in Microbiome Sciences. By hosting thought leaders like Dr. Huttenhower we aim to foster meaningful conversations and collaborations around some of the most urgent and complex challenges in microbiome science.
During the lecture Huttenhower will delve into his pioneering research on how microbial communities influence and interact with their human hosts.
